Celebrating International Self-Care Day at Songbird

Songbird was born from a deep connection with families affected by developmental and intellectual disabilities, inspiring us to provide comprehensive support services that extend beyond mere care. We emphasize understanding, appreciation, and close collaboration with caregivers who play a crucial role in the lives of our participants.

Founded in April 2015, Songbird opened its first three homes, initially supporting nine NDIS participants. Since then, we have garnered recognition as a leader in the industry, earning the prestigious title of 2016 Disability Service of the Year. Today, Songbird proudly offers safe and secure accommodations across numerous group homes in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, and the Hunter region, while continually expanding our range of services to enable individuals with disabilities to thrive within their communities.

Supported by dedicated staff, partners, and advocates, Songbird remains committed to empowering those we serve to exceed perceived limitations.

Why Self-Care Matters

In the midst of caregiving demands, it’s easy to overlook personal needs. International Self-Care Day, celebrated annually on the 24th of July, serves as a wonderful reminder that self-care isn’t selfish—it’s fundamental. As the saying goes, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Taking time to recharge isn’t just beneficial for you, it enhances the quality of care you provide.

How Songbird Supports Caregivers

At Songbird, our commitment extends beyond our participants to encompass their caregivers throughout Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, and the Hunter Valley. Here’s how we support you:

  • Short-Term Accommodation: We recognise the importance of respite for participants and their informal supports. Our Short-Term Accommodation, funded by the NDIS, offers crucial breaks to rejuvenate.
  • Community Access & In-Home Support: Songbird provides tailored drop-in support and facilitates community access for NDIS participants residing in their own homes, with family, or in shared living arrangements.
  • Day Programs & Activities: Featuring programs like Drums Alive—an evidence-based, multi-generational initiative blending movement with rhythmic drumming—our daytime disability programs promote physical health and mental well-being through enriching experiences.

Celebrating You

This International Self-Care Day, take a moment to celebrate yourself. Whether you enjoy a peaceful cup of tea, a stroll in nature, or simply a deep breath, remember that your well-being is essential—not only for yourself but for those you care for.
